Thursday, January 24, 2008 Marines Nice windy Thursday morning I have here. Nothing much to do except watching my Linear Algebra webcast online. But argh, I'm a bit lazy to do that so early in the day. So my mind brought me back to Tuesday during my Game Design lecture. I was talking to this exchange student from the United States, a 21yr old female. It's her first time here in Asia n she's been in Singapore for less than a month. As like most "ang mo", she's pretty spontaneous in class, maybe helped by the fact that my lecturer is oso an ang mo. I'll take a picture of him someday. And we were chatting abt SG n the US. She was surprised i'm turning 23 soon, n so i told her abt the stupid 2yrs i have to waste in THE ARMY. So i asked her abt the military stuffs in the US, n i was appalled by what she told me. I owas thought those people who join the military in the US are the patriotic people who love their country. But she told me that isn't the main reason for people to join the military. Well, she said those higher ranking soldiers are the patriotic ones but those lower ranking soldiers mainly join the the military for the monetary benefits. In short, the poor join the military in order to get by in life. The military would pay for their education n stuffs cos university fees in the US are extremely expensive. Then she gave me the price of US$20k for 1 year of university education fees. I was like so damn shocked. Compare this to the S$6k i pay per year to NUS, mine is really peanuts. Sheesh, so I told her even if i'm the poor in the US, I won't want to join the military due to the high tendency of the country going to war. She juz laughed n said not everyone goes to war, but well, if you're a Marine, then you're going to Iraq. Our little chat ended here as the lecturer continued with lesson. I learned something new that day abt the United States, but I could hardly understand what's going on in class on that day. Haha.. Marines in Iraq Another matter to note, eBay started this blog thing on the website. I laughed out loud seeing that. Who goes to eBay to read blogs? I thought people only go there to buy stuffs? Anyway, I've been selling on eBay for almost a year now, juz a fun thing i do to earn a little money. Here's the blog link http://blogs.ebay.com.sg/klinsmann85 |
