Sunday, May 01, 2011 GE 2011 5yrs ago, PAP won 66% of the votes, 5yrs later today, PAP is facing strong opposition, with only Tanjong Pagar GRC led by MM Lee having a walkover. In total, 82 seats are being contested, n this is the hottest election battle i've ever seen in my life. Why a sudden rise in opposition? Well in my opinion, it probably stems from the rise in discontent among Singapore citizens. Oppositions today are able to grab on many issues to oppose PAP.
Never have i seen so many weak points which the opposition can attack on the PAP. N judging by the reception which the opposition parties are receiving, PAP has quite alot to worry about. In the past, i've never really taken notice of the opposition parties. Firstly, their voice couldn't be heard due to the lack of social media like Facebook, Twitter n YouTube of today. Secondly, their candidates lack quality. Thirdly, PAP was doing "well" n there was nothing much opposition parties could attack, which makes them pretty meek at arguing their points. How things have changed 5yrs later today. Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, YouTube n higher internet penetration have totally changed the tide in General Elections. In fact, these channels are even more popular than the Newspapers n TV which PAP uses. I also see a rise in quality within the opposition candidates; Chen Show Mao(WP), Nicole Seah(NSP), Vincent Wijeysingha(SDP) juz to name a few. Many Singaporeans are also disgruntled with the way things are run n policies were made, judging by the bad reception of PAP i see among the netizens. I can sense a change coming, n it will depend on EVERY SINGLE Singaporean on whether this change will materialize. This is the time to do something if u want ur voices heard in the parliament in the future. |
