Saturday, September 06, 2008 Emails Recently, I received two emails in my school mailbox.. ==================================================================== Dear Students SECURITY ADVISORY – OUTRAGE OF MODESTY An outrage of modesty of a student in NUS reported on 2 September 2008. The incident occurred when the student was travelling on an internal shuttle bus in Kent Ridge Campus. The culprit is described as follows: - Between 25 and 30 years old - About 1.70 m tall - Medium built with fair complexion - Short, straight black hair - Was last seen wearing a plain white polo T-shirt and blue jeans, and - Carrying some books. The alleged molester was last seen taking the lift to Level 4 at Central Library Building after alighting at the Central Library bus stop around 1.50 pm on 2 September. Campus Security would like to seek the assistance of anyone who witnessed the incident. Please contact us directly at DID: 6874 1616. We would like to advise students and staff to take note of the following preventive measures for use both on and off campus: a. Always be alert and attentive to the surroundings. If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to the nearest crowded area. Call Campus Security or the Police to seek help b. Avoid travelling alone at night. If you need to go out at night, arrange to go in a group c. Sit close to the aisle when using public transport d. Remain alert, do not nap or sleep while travelling on public transport e. Alert other passengers or seek help from the driver if someone is making you uncomfortable or touching you inappropriately f. If your assailant is armed, do not try to resist as this might provoke the assailant further. Be calm and try to remember any distinct features of the assailant You are strongly encouraged to report strangers who behave suspiciously to Campus Security at 6874 1616 or the Police at 999. Thank you. ==================================================================== Deans of Faculties/Schools Masters of Halls of Residence SECURITY ALERT – THEFT OF LAPTOPS Campus Security has received reports of laptop thefts recently. This week, there were four cases which had occurred in NUS canteens during lunch hours. In these cases, the victims had left their laptop on the seat in the canteen while they went to buy food. When they returned, their laptops were already missing. We would like to inform all staff and students not to leave their items unattended especially in crowded areas like the canteen. If you are with your friends, take turns to have someone to look after the belongings while the others are buying food. Don't create opportunity for criminals. You are encouraged to report strangers who behave suspiciously to Campus Security at 6874 1616 or the Police at 999. Thank you. ==================================================================== For email one, I think it's quite unfortunate dat such a thing can happen in campus. But I do have my reservations as to whether it was really a molestation. During dat kind of time where everyone is rushing to a different venue for class in the shuttle bus, the bus can be very very crowded. N if the bus driver decides that he's training for a trail in the upcoming talent spotting event held by one of the Formula One racing team, then u're in for a real bumpy ride. I once had a fellow female student resorting to grabbing my arm out of desperation when the stupid bus made a hard braking juz b4 a hump. So is that molestation? Wad if one day I lost grip while the bus brakes n one of my hands conveniently landed on a female's chest, n I accidentally clench my grip making it feel like i'm groping her?? Is that considered as molesting her? Nevertheless, I think it's hard to nab the guy, if he's a molester, since the description mentioned is like so common among NUS students. My friend even joked that i'm the molester as the description almost entirely fits me. Email two is juz plain classic. Every semester without fail, I get this similar mail. Clever some NUS students may be, but they're not street smart enuff, or maybe they're juz plain brainless when they're not into exams or such. Leaving their LAPTOPS unattended while ordering food, haf they gone bonkers? Low crime doesn't mean no crime. Somehow, I think these students are idiots, fancy leaving something that cost thousands of dollars on a chair unattended, serve them right for losing their laptops. I haf no sympathy for them, n all I can say is learn ur bloody lesson n go get a new laptop. No more money? Den live without one. I did leave my laptop on the chair unattended b4, but dat's located where I could see it while ordering my food. Dat's the best one can do to haf that little more convenience. I was also hoping dat I could nab the son of a bitch laptop stealer when i do dat, but he haven't bite the bait till today. We all gotta be vigilant, if not u'll haf no one to blame other than urself when u let ur guard down to allow a crime befall u. |
