Friday, February 03, 2006 Robbie Fowler scored in debut It was a night when the Big Four of the EPL fumbled. Manchester United lost to Blackburn Rovers 4-3, Arsenal losing to West Ham 3-2, Chelsea n Aston Villa drew 1-1, n Liverpool drew with Birmingham City 1-1. Shocking results, especially the result at Ewood Park where Blackburn Rovers did a double over Man Utd for the 1st time in 75 yrs. Arsenal looked pathetic with England international Sol Campbell making horrendes mistakes. Rio Ferdinand of Man Utd was worse, operating in a makeshift central midfield role, he failed in every aspect of his game. He's the one to blame for the Red Devils' loss. A schoolboy mistake gifted Blackburn their opening goal n they never looked back since. New signing David Bentley helped himself to his 1st hat-trick to condemn Man Utd to a 4-3 loss. Chelsea drew blanks in front of the Villa goal in a match marred by dubious refree decisions. There were strong claims of penalty during the match for Chelsea, but the ref didn't budge, n so The Blues will have to be content with a point. Credit to Aston Villa, they made the game difficult for the Londoners. Lastly, the match at Anfield was a disappointment. When Birmingham was down to 10 men in the 23rd minute, i thought Liverpool would be cruising towards 3 points. However, they slowed down their tempo n failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage. It was only till the half hour mark that the captain Setven Gerrard whacked in a goal. Frustratingly, Liverpool was caught napping in the 88th minute when Xabi Alonso scored a freak own goal, chesting the ball towards his own net after a cross by Chris Sutton. The game erupted into frenzy as Liverpool poured forward in search for the one goal to record a victory against the midlanders. Alonso came close with a curling freekick n Hamann agonisingly hit the bar. In the last minute of the match, The God surfaced. Robbie Fowler did an overhead kick n sent the ball into the net in front of The Kop. The whole stadium erupted with joy!! But no, he was being denied of a dream debut. The linesman had judged him to be in an offside position when he executed the kick. Disappointment in the end. Fowler scored, but it wasn't allowed. How beautiful that overhead kick was. His return is going to signal a new style of flair play. He may not be as fit as the rest, but his footballing brain is better than anyone else. He is afterall, the most natural finisher in EPL now. |
